Invest in Yourself
Amarillo Federation of Teachers is dedicated to promoting teacher professionalism, integrity in the teaching profession, and advocacy at the local, state and national levels. We have a full-service local office and affilate services at the state and national level through the Texas American Federation of Teachers and American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

We commonly refer to our local as Amarillo AFT.

Member Benefits at the Local Level
Amarillo Federation of Teachers is the only local organization with an office staffed by a full time employee who is available to visit with you, visit your school, or be your personal advocate should you need any assistance. Our local office also:

  • Distributes a report after each school board meeting.
  • Recruits members to attend educational and leadership conferences.

Continuing Education
Amarillo AFT provides Continuing Education Credit to its members with a series of workshops including: “The Safe Schools Act,” “FERPA and the Texas Education Code of Ethics,” and “Know your Rights.”  Amarillo AFT has also partnered with Teachscape to provide online graduate credit at a discount for members.

Member Benefits at the National Level
The American Federation of Teachers provides its local offices with the information and tools necessary for grass roots lobbying for issues such as No Child Left Behind, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and The Federal Education Right to Privacy Act.  The AFT website allows members to send letters and faxes to their elected officials in Washington.  AFT also provides members with several publications, including its award winning profession journal, The American Teacher. Our AFT Plus program offers members substantial savings on a variety of products and services.

Member Benefits at the State Level
Texas Federation of Teachers not only provides timely information about pending and current educational legislation but also promotes individual participation in legislative issues.  The “TFT Legislative Hotline,” available on e-mail or on the TFT website, assures members of the most current legislative information available.  The four lobbyists employed by TFT are unquestionably the most informed and respected teacher representatives in Austin. TFT has implemented numerous workshops at the local level on issues including social security, TRS, PDAS, and the recent House Bill 1. Members find the Texas Teacher, another award-winning publication, to be one of their most informative educational journals.
